     Antifree radical activity of resveratrol in guinea pig cochlea

    【Abstract】 AIM: To study the prevention of gentamicin (GM) ototoxicity by resveratrol (Res) in guinea pig. METHODS: Auditory brainstem response, cochlear preparation and transmission electron microscope were used to evaluate the effects of hair cell on hearing threshold and the morphology of hair cell. Serum levels of GM was also tested. Guinea pigs were randomly assigned to 3 groups (GMtreated alone, GM and Res in combination and one control group). Serum levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA) were also tested. RESULTS: MDA concentration in serum of the GM+Res group was significantly lower than that in the GM group (P<0.05), while SOD level was much higher than that in the GM group (P<0.05). Res did not alter the serum level of GM. Morphological results were consistent with functional changes. The worst damages occurred in the basal circles. Damages in upper circles were lighter. GM mainly impaired the outer hair cells, on which Res had protective effect. CONCLUSION: Res may be a promising therapeutic agent to clean out free radical. ......
