The fact of our gathering for 10th BISPEN with provision of an entry level course is testimony to the increased importance of the relationship of nutrition and disease. Multiple studies have demonstrated that malnourished patients have impaired wound healing, compromized immune function, and increased morbidity and mortality across a wide-range of disease states. Uncorrected malnutrition results in prolonged hospitalization, more frequent return to the hospital after discharge, increased health care expense, and, most important to the patients, delayed return to an active and productive life. Good nutrition support is best accomplished with the team approach. The ideal team is multidigciplinary, consisting of one or more physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and dieticians. The protocol approach to delivering nutrition support has been demonstrated to provide increased efficiency, reduced expense, reduced complications, and reduced waste. This further results in a shortened hospital stay for the patient, with overall better compliance, and a better outcome. Examples of successful protocols will be presented. Further success for mitrition suport for hospitalized patients is obtained by developing standards for care. Published standards create an awareness of the importance of nutrition, help set goals and priorities,facilitate better education, and lead to better outcomes. Examples of nutrition standards for care developed by ASPEN and ESPEN will be presented. Adaptation of standards of care to the China experience will be discussed.
