【Source】 Book of Jin Wen Qiao Biography, compiled and edited during the Tang Dynasty (618-907).
【Interpretation】Yiwu, also known as Guan Zhong (725BC-645BC), was a well-known statesman during the
Spring and Autumn Period (722BC-481BC). The idiom is used to describe a person with great talent in saving and governing the country.
Sima Rui (276-323) was the first emperor of the Dong Jin Dynasty (317-420). After he ascended the throne, the aristocratic families from the east of the Yangtze River paid no attention to him, thinking he was not the direct descendant of the Xi Jin (265-316) imperial family. They chose to wait and see if Sima Rui could do a good job in running the country.
Sima Rui was anxious about this and turned to Wang Dao the Minister (276-339) for help. Wang Dao then proposed a series of talents recruiting plans. Soon the aristocratic families started to seek shelter from the court, which consolidated the reign of Dong Jin in the south.
Therefore, Sima Rui thought highly of Wang Dao and trusted him even more. There was a saying at the time that Wang and Sima shared the throne, indicating that the two ruled the country together.
Wen Qiao (288-329), the famous general of Dong Jin, praised Wang Dao and said, “With you, a statesman as great as Guan Zhong, in the east of the Yangtze River, we have nothing to worry about at all.”
