后起之秀

【Interpretation】Used to describe an outstanding and promising person in the younger generation as an up-and-coming
youngster or a rising star.
【释意】秀：特异、优秀，表示后辈中的优秀者。比喻后来出现的或新成长起来的优秀人才。
During the Dong Jin Dynasty (317-420)， there was a very knowledgeable court official called Fan Ning (339-401). Yet， as he was too honest and outspoken， he was demoted from the secretary of the emperor to a district governor.
东晋武帝时期有个官员叫范宁，很有学问。他因为直言获罪，从中书侍郎被贬为太守。
Fan Ning’s nephew， Wang Chen (？-392)， was very smart and studious since childhood. After he started his official career， his talents were highly appraised by the emperor. He got promoted in his twenties to be the provincial governor of Jinzhou， a superior position than his uncle’s.
范宁有个外甥叫王忱，自幼聪明好学，入仕之后，很受朝廷赏识，还不到三十岁就升任荆州刺史，地位在舅舅之上。
There was one day when Fan Ning held a banquet at home. He wanted to introduce Wang Chen to his friend， Zhang Xuan； however， as Wang Chen saw Zhang Xuan just sitting there making a pretense of dignity， he refused to say hello to Zhang Xuan.
有一次，范宁在家里举行宴会，他想让王忱结识一下他的朋友张玄。但王忱看到张玄故作姿态正襟危坐的样子，根本不愿意与他打招呼。
Fan Ning blamed Wang Chen for his impoliteness and told him that Zhang Xuan was “A Talent of Wuzhong (now in Jiangsu Province)”. Yet Wang Chen expressed that， if he was a real talent with reputation， Zhang Xuan should have treated the younger generation more kindly. Fan Ning agreed with Wang Chen’s viewpoint. Later， people started to call Wang Chen the “Talent Rising Star”.
范宁责怪王忱太没礼貌，说张玄是“吴中之秀”，王忱却认为张玄如果真是名士，那应该对后辈的态度更和善才对。范宁觉得他说得在理，后来人们就尊称王忱为“后起之秀”。, http://www.100md.com
