During the Dong Jin Dynasty (316-420),Su Jun (?-328) the General rose in revolt and his troops captured the capital city of Jiankang (now Nanjing). Su Jun took the emperor as a hostage and ran the court on his own authority. Wen Qiao(288-329), a Dong Jin courtier, organized allied forces to fight against the rebel army, but failed in every battle of the first few ones.
His frequent failures and the shortage of army provisions made the chief leader of allied forces Tao Kan (259-334) very frustrated. He thought it was better to withdraw and wait for another opportunity to fight again.
In order to make the soldier calm, Wen Qiao advised Tao Kan, “The current situation is just like riding on a tiger and finding it hard to get off. The only way is to kill the tiger. We just cannot stop halfway.”
Hearing Wen Qiao’s words, Tao Kan pulled himself together and encouraged the soldiers to fight as one. Finally, they overcame all the difficulties and defeated the rebel army. The capital city of Jiankang was recaptured.
