[Abstract] Objective: To investigate the change of serum Vaspin and the relationship of serum Vaspin level to related factor in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and to clarify the probable mechanism of Vaspin in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods: Serum Vaspin level in 60 patients with RA were measured by an ELISA, and the relationship of serum Vaspin level with erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), α1-acid Glycoprotein (AAG), C-reactive protein (CRP), rheumatoid factor (RF) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) were also analyzed. Results: Fasting serum Vaspin level were significantly higher in RA group than that in control group [(1.58±0.20) μg/L vs (0.71±0.09) μg/L](P<0.01). Fasting serum Vaspin level were significantly higher in active RA subgroup than that in inactive RA subgroup [(1.98±0.15) μg/L vs (1.32±0.12) μg/L](P<0.01). The level of Vaspin in female subjects was modestly higher than that in male subjects, but the diference is not significant. Fasting serum Vaspin level in patients with RA correlated positively with TNF-α and CRP (r=0.64, P<0.01; r=0.47, P<0.05). TNF-α was the independently predictor of serum Vaspin in patients with RA. Conclusion: Vaspin is possibly a kind of adipocytokines associated with inflammatory reaction, which may contribute, in part, to the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis ......
