ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate the effect of free fatty acids (FFAs) on proliferation of human periodontal ligament fibrob-lasts (hPDLFs) in vitro and to study the roles of free fatty acids in the mechanism between the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and periodon-titis. Methods: HPDLFs were cultured in virto which played vital role in the periodontium tissue repaired, HPDLFs were deal with vari-ous concentrations of FFAs for 24h-72h and fibroblast proliferation was measured by colorimetric3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphanyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Results: FFAs inhibited the proliferation of hPDLFs in a dose-and time-dependent maanerwith MTT assay (P<0.01 vs. control respectively), the inhibition rate is the best significantly atter cultured 72h (P<0.01). Conclusion:FFAsinhibits the proliferation ofhPDLFsin vi.tro and which lead to the delayed repare of the periodontal tissue in obesespatients.
