Linda K. Curtiss, Chair of the Leadership Committee of the ATVB Council
We would like to congratulate the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) on their appointment of Elizabeth G. Nabel, MD, FAHA as Director. Dr Nabel (or Betsy as she prefers to be called) is a leader in both basic and clinical research focusing on coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction; and molecular, cellular, and genetic mechanisms that cause vascular disorders. She is a pioneer in development of methods for gene therapy for vascular disease.
As a volunteer, Dr Nabel has made multiple valuable contributions to the leadership of the American Heart Association, including service as chairperson of the Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology (ATVB); chair of the Scientific Publishing Committee, and chair of the Search Committee for the Editor of ATVB in 1998; Consulting Editor for ATVB; and membership on the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions Program Committee, the Science Advisory and Coordinating Committee, the National Board of Directors, Nominating and Awards Committee, and the Council Operations Committee.
Dr Nabel’s strong leadership skills and reputation as an insightful and compassionate researcher, dedicated to improving the health and well-being of all people, will help the NHLBI to reach the common goals and visions shared by both public and private research entities—a significant reduction in coronary disease and stroke in our lifetime.
In 2000, Dr Nabel received the Special Recognition Award in Vascular Biology from the ATVB Council. In 2003, she received the Women’s Leadership Mentoring Award from the ATVB Council. Today she is an even more visible role model for scientists at all levels who have a passion for knowledge and want to make a difference. We would like to congratulate Betsy and wish her well with the challenges she will face with this new appointment.
