A previously healthy 34-year-old woman who had back pain was referred for radiography of the lumbar spine. The patient's laboratory data were normal. The radiograph showed multiple faceted stones outlining the contours of the gallbladder. Ultrasonography of the upper abdomen showed multiple gallstones with acoustic shadowing throughout the gallbladder, which did not contain visible bile. The patient underwent laparoscopic surgery to remove the gallbladder; numerous calculi were found to be filling the lumen. She had an uneventful recovery.
