This scanning electronmicrograph, showing the interaction between a dendritic cell (blue) and a T lymphocyte (yellow), is the type of image being sought by the 2005 Visions of Science photographic awards. It was taken by Dr Olivier Schwartz of the Institut Pasteur, Paris.
The awards, which are organised by Novartis Pharmaceuticals in association with the Daily Telegraph and supported by the Science Photo Library, include five main categories and a range of special awards.
One of these awards is the medicine and life award, which is sponsored by the BMJ and includes deputy editor Tony Delamothe among its judges.
Judges are looking for the ability to capture powerful images that tell a story about medical research, diagnosis, and treatment or that portray medicine in creative and unusual ways.
Information on how to enter and entry forms are available at www.visions-of-science.co.uk or by telephoning 020 7613 5577. The closing date for entries is 6 May 2005.(London Caroline White)
