The Indian Journal of Pediatrics, 125 (IInd Floor), Gautam Nagar, Post Box No. 3875, New Delhi-110 049, India

A new year gives us an opportunity to reflect on the year that was to examine our achievements, and also brings with it the expectations of a better future. During 2006 the Indian Journal of Pediatrics received a large number of original articles for publication, giving us the opportunity to select the best ones. Our project to reward the post-graduate students for their thesis work elicited 24 submissions, and we were pleased with the high quality of the thesis. Elsewhere in this issue we announce the awards. We hope this feature will grow in the years to come. We also published special supplement on Asthma, and new books entitled Recent Advances in Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Emergency Medicine, all of which were very well received by the pediatric fraternity in India.

We have been engaged in negotiations with Springer regarding joint publication of the journal. We are glad to announce that this affiliation has now been formalized, and in 2007 we will collaborate closely with Springer for our Indian and International editions. This will provide an unprecedented global audience for our publications, while at the same time giving us an opportunity to upgrade our services to international level with the help of Springer. We will now accept and review the submitted articles online, cutting down the time for acceptance, and final publication. This would obviously appeal to our readers. The journal will now be accessible free with the subscription at the Springer website. This necessarily entails that the journal will no longer be freely accessible. We realized that the Indian journals are underpricing and undermarketing themselves in the international arena. India has been excluded from HINARI, which is an arrangement by the major publishers that their journals will be available free to readers in developing countries. If the international press does not give us this privilege why should we make our journal free to the International community.

In the current year we will augment our support to the young pediatricians in their education and research. We will not only increase the number of awards but also provide them funds to attend conferences to present their work. We have decided to provide greater opportunities for the young faculty members to upgrade their skills in different specialties.

We would like to offer a word of advice for those readers who go through this editiorial. Every rare case you see or the study you carry out does not merit publication. Only those research studies or case reports merit publication, that add something to the existing knowledge, or provide a new angle or information on the subject. For example, we continue to receive numerous papers on feeding practices based on interviewing mothers that do not add to what we already know. Similarly many papers are received on growth studies in various communities. These papers are of interest if they bring out hitherto unknown or little known facts, or are carried out on a sufficiently large group of subjects, or some intervention has been carried out to remedy the situation, so that the readers get some message on how to improve their pediatric practice.

We look forward to 2007 with great hopes for the future of pediatric service research in India.

We also take this opportunity to thank all the reviewers, editorial board members, advisers and above all our readers a very happy and successful new year.(Verma IC)
